Hey guys, I'm new to yota motorhomes. just got a 87 dolphin, its still
in the old owners storage yard and i want to move it. Has anyone loaded
one on a uhaul type car carrier or should i just let a tow truck get
it. It looks to low to let a sling truck pick it up, so is my only
choice a flat bed tow or could they use the wheel dollies for the back
wheels with the sling truck. Thanks for the help. I posted pics of my
find under "87 dolphin" in the photos area.

I couldn't find your pics but your find must be undriveable and can't roll on it's rear wheel. How far do you have to tow?Letting someone else take the risk with a roll off may be the best bet.
I know of one that was towed from Phoenix to L.A.using a 2 wheel U-Hauldolly, but be sure it's rated for theweight.
BTW: That was an "Unapproved by U-Haul" tow, they may not rent to you if you tell them it's a motorhome, just say 1 ton truckand verify the dolly and tire weight capacity first.

Welcome to the group, Dave! Yeah, I know, you've been around for a
week or so... :-)
When my Dolphin broke down in VA, the tow guy brought a rollback to
haul it to the shop. He did have to take one detour though, to avoid a
low underpass. I've also towed mine myself with a wheel lift truck,
but only for about 4 miles. It could be dollied, but I don't think
it's necessary if the roads are in good shape. At close to 6,000 lbs,
you'd probably have trouble finding a rental car carrier with enough
capacity. The width might be a problem as well.

I should have added that if you're towing rear wheels down, and it's
an automatic, make sure the driveshaft or axles get pulled before
heading down the road with it.

Wouldn't that make it an illegal and dangerous tow? What would this misinformation do to an insurance claim? Is that any different than towing a trailer w/toyhome? Seems kinda risky for other people on the roadways , anyway we probably shouldn't hear too much more from this quarter on towing being unsafe. Just my 2cents worth.

Hi Dave: I've got an 87 dolphin that I bot last Spring... put about
8,000 miles on it since then and have been very happy. I just looked
at your photos... just like mine without all the "storage" :) Looks
like you've got a project going on... How many miles on her and does
it run? I'd also love to know the price you paid...
Best of luck and I'd be happy to help with info as would the whole
group.

Hey Sunrader Bob, the pics are under " 87 dolphin " i just posted
them last night so look for the newest pics. It hasn't been started
or driven for a few years so i dont want to take the chance of
killing my fuel pump or injectors, im going to pull the tank and have
it cleaned. I was more worried with scraping the back of the dolphin
while loading onto a flat-bed tow truck. The tires are low on air and
im sure they need to be replaced. thanks for the suggestions.

Thanks Dutch, i forgot to mention its a automatic, thats why i was
thinking of the wheel dollies for the rear wheels with the wheel lift
tow truck or sling type tow truck. I didn't realize the trucks weighed
that much i guess, i'm so used to regular toyota 4x4 trucks. I will
have to take that into consideration when i do move it.

Hey Mark, I found it on craigslist for $500.00 plus another $600.00
for title fee's and penalties. I haven't tried to start it since its
been so long since it was started. i want to clean the fuel system
before i try to start it. It has 123,000 miles, it's cleaned out now
but i still haven't got into it until i get the storage in my name or
just move it out of the storage lot.

Hey Norma, He was frustrated with the motorhome getting broke into and
just put it online to see if he would get any replies. He couldn't get
out to it to clean it out before he sold it so thats how it looked when
my girlfriend looked at it. He figured if he didn't sell it he would
fix it himself but i kept bugging him. He even didn't show up once to
show it, but for the price i figured if it was that bad i could part it
out and make my money back but now i want to fix it and drive the
little thing. If he gets the keys made like he said he would then i'm
good to go, but the price i got when i called for keys being made was
about $200.00 , now thats steep.

Seems like a deal to me... especially if you can do most of the work
yourself. I've got about $5.5K into mine ... $3.5K purchase and $2K
fix up. At your purchase price you've certainly got a lot of room
for fix-up investing... sounds like fun!

Norma, he said its cleaned out now. just waiting for him to get boat
off roof that was supposed to keep water away from leaky vent. the only
thing i have concern with is the motorhome door itself was pried open
and basicly is off the ripped off the camper. but i should be able to
fix it or replace it.

A competent tow operator can load it on a rollback without scrapping,
Dave. We do that sort of thing with low slung cars all the time. As I
said in my other post, it can be towed with the rear wheels down, by
either popping the driveshaft loose at the rear end, or pulling the
axles out. The full floating hubs make pulling the axles pretty easy.
Just makes sure the open hubs are protected with temporary caps of
some sort. Plastic bags and duct tape work well if the tow operator
doesn't have plastic plugs that fit it.

Oh sorry, I thought you meant YOU cleaned it out. Yeah, in one of those pictures you can see the water line around the vent. But like someone else said, for that price you gotta a lot of room for "fix up" money.

Thanks Dutch, thats what i wanted to hear. I forgot about the
removable axle's for towing. I would rather have it towed by the flat
bed truck anyhow, just to save myself the trouble of the driveshaft
or axle removal. I know most tow operators will charge more because
it's a "motorhome", have you run into a difference in prices.

Was that $200 for on-site locksmith service, Dave? I was missing some
keys when I bought my Coachmen Class A, and it only cost me about $50
when I pulled the locks out and took them to the locksmith's shop. It
took them about three days to rekey one lock, and hand fit a key for
the third lock that couldn't be disassembled, but they knew I wasn't
in a hurry for them.
