RAC Full Form
RAC Full Form: RAC, which stands for Reservation Against Cancellation, is a ticket condition in the Indian Railways that offers a unique travel option for passengers. In this article, we delve deeper into what RAC means and how it affects travelers.
Riding with RAC
When passengers hold an RAC ticket, they are guaranteed passage on the train and can occupy a designated seat. However, there’s a catch—RAC tickets do not secure a berth for overnight journeys. While travel assurance is granted, a specific berth is not assigned. But here’s the good news: by the time the final chart is prepared, there’s a good chance that RAC ticket holders will get a confirmed seat and even an assigned cabin. Having an RAC ticket is certainly preferable to being on a waitlist.
RAC in Detail
RAC, short for Reservation Against Cancellation, operates on a conditional reservation system. Essentially, it means that passengers with RAC reservations have a chance to obtain a confirmed ticket if someone with a confirmed booking cancels their ticket. Reservations can be made up to 120 days in advance, but life is unpredictable, and travelers often have to cancel their plans. When this happens, those in the RAC queue may get a golden opportunity to secure a confirmed ticket, ensuring a more comfortable journey.
No Fixed Berths for RAC
One important thing to note about RAC is that it guarantees you a spot on the train, but it doesn’t guarantee a specific berth for sleeping at night. RAC passengers are allowed to sit during the journey. They may share a single berth, divided into two seats—one for each traveler. Most often, RAC tickets are confirmed after the final chart is prepared and the train departs from its origin station. Passengers can approach the Ticket Examiner (TT) for information on the seat’s current status.
When Do RAC Passengers Get Berths?
RAC passengers may be assigned a vacant berth under three circ*mstances:
- If a ticket is canceled at the last moment.
- If some VIP quotas or other reserved quotas are still available.
- If any passenger who booked a ticket doesn’t show up for the journey.
Cancellation Charges for RAC Reservations
Cancellation charges for RAC reservations vary depending on whether you have an i-ticket or an e-ticket. For i-tickets, there is a cancellation charge of Rs. 60 per passenger. In the case of e-tickets, no refund is provided for RAC cancellations, and no TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt) is generated up to thirty minutes before the train’s scheduled departure.
RAC in 2nd AC
In second AC trains, RAC is allowed, but it’s important to note that not all trains permit RAC in the first-class AC. Additionally, RAC is not available on trains with PQWL (Pooled Quota Waitlist). To check the status of your RAC reservation, including whether it has been confirmed, you can visit the PNR status page on the railway’s official website.
Conclusion – RAC Full Form
Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC) is a unique offering by Indian Railways, providing travelers with a chance to secure passage even when their ticket is not initially confirmed. While it ensures transport, it does not guarantee a private berth. Instead, a single berth is split into two seats for RAC ticket holders. If passengers with confirmed tickets do not board the train or cancel their reservations before departure, the vacant space may be allocated to RAC ticket holders. RAC offers a flexible travel option for those who may not have had confirmed tickets at the outset.
