Can using a supplement actually fortify your hair, skin, and nails?
According to Engelman, supplements can "definitely" be of service. "They are a great way to enhance your skincare, hair care, and other regimens because they can provide vital vitamins and minerals that our body needs to have healthy skin cells or hair follicles," says the derm. "As we age, many of our natural occurring proteins and vitamins deplete and supplements help to replenish this loss and support the building blocks of our body."
What are the best ingredients for hair, skin, and nail vitamins?
Collagen isn't just a beauty buzzword. "As we age, production of collagen, a naturally occurring protein in the body, decreases," says Engelman. "I find that taking collagen supplements to combat the effects of aging can be extremely beneficial. This helps to increase protein support, which can positively impact the skin, hair and nails."
Vitamins and supplements aren't regulated by the FDA in the same way drugs are, so one thing Engelman stresses is to look at the brand's clinical studies. "Not all proteins are sourced or tested in labs that are up to medical standards," she says. Therefore, "A brand should be transparent in where and how they source their proteins and vitamins."

When can I expect to see results?
"The timeline of seeing the benefits from supplements differs based on many factors," says Engelman. "Depending on the strength or dose of the supplement, the frequency of consumption, and the individual themselves, it can take anywhere from two to six months to start seeing results." However, if you don't see results after six months, don't get too worried: According to Robinson, it can take even longer. Plus, she adds, "Consistency with these changes matters more than anything."
